We wake after a very cold night and little sleep. After packing the tent we drive into the town for breakfast. The options for style of egg is baffling: easy over, easy up etc and we take a guess. Stewart orders easy up and fortunately it's what he wanted, a plain fried egg.

We have got ahead of our planned schedule and decide to take a leisurely day touring the Indian Pueblos. We set off early and arrive at the Coronado (State) Monument before it has opened, but this is of little consequence as admission is free and the visitors centre is closed for renovation.

We leave Navajo at a few minutes past 8:00 with the intention of arriving in Albuquerque in the early evening. That should give us plenty of sight seeing time on the way. From a review of the map and route we have identified a number of potentially interesting stops on the way: Zuni Pueblo, El Morro National Monument, the lava fields and the ice caves.

We have a long way to go today so we get off to an early start. We drive along in silence, each of us in our own thoughts. Being in the company of only one other person 24 hours a day is a new experience and we have run out of things to say. The silence is giving us a break.
Tuesday 14th June 1983
We are late getting up. I had been lying in bed awake for what seemed like ages but I had thought it was still early. Now it is nearly 10am. It doesn't take us long to get up and ready to leave.
Monday 13th June 1983
We set off just before 9:00am. It is starting to become our custom that we call for the day's food and ice as our first job after breakfast. A 1 lb bag of ice costs $1.
The traffic is much busier today, maybe because it is Monday and people are back at work and school but we decide to take the local and more scenic roads rather than the interstate.
